I’m Daniel L. Smith, a historian, journalist, and research writer passionate about exploring the intersection of history, culture, public affairs, and modern society. With both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in History, my work is driven by a commitment to uncovering the deeper context behind today’s issues and presenting it through engaging, accessible storytelling. Currently I engage in private projects with businesses, governments, and private entities that employ my skill sets.

As a published contributor to publications including WorldAtlas and other media outlets, I specialize in historical analysis, long-form research, and investigative writing that connects past events to contemporary conversations. My background in academic research has strengthened my skills in source analysis, critical thinking, and developing content that informs and challenges readers. 

In addition to my writing career, I am a United States Coast Guard veteran, an experience that has shaped my perspective on civic life, public service, leadership, and American institutions. Whether covering American history, social change, or cultural commentary, I strive to produce thoughtful, accurate, and meaningful work that encourages deeper public understanding and discussion.

About Me

Daniel L. Smith is an American historian, independent researcher, and author based in Eureka, California. His research focuses on the history of Northern California, particularly the period surrounding early American settlement, regional development, and the interactions among Indigenous peoples, settlers, and government institutions during the nineteenth century.

Education and Career

Smith earned a Master of Arts in History and has conducted independent historical research using archival collections, government records, newspapers, diaries, and personal correspondence. His work has included research utilizing collections maintained by the U.S. National Archives and other historical repositories.

Based in Eureka, California, Smith has written on topics related to Northern California history and has contributed historical articles to online publications. He has also participated in public history outreach through interviews, presentations, and community events.

Publications

Smith is the author of 1845–1870: An Untold Story of Northern California (2019), a historical study examining Northern California during the transition from the Mexican era through the early decades of American statehood. The book draws upon primary source materials to explore settlement, political change, economic development, and regional conflict.

He has also written Complex America, addressing contemporary issues from a Christian historical perspective.
